[It's been a few days since Father's Day. And he got a really nice surprise from his daughter that he never thought possible. Bulla training and honing her skills and power, it really meant something to him; so he's flipping his journal open now since Luceti played a large part of it. He's not even angry this time.]

It's come to my attention that a good number of you had a hand in the gift I received over the weekend. I will say I'm impressed- the lot of you have done the impossible with my daughter Bulla and it most certainly paid off. So for that...[His voice trails off, since saying these sorts of things isn't exactly natural to him.] For that I am grateful. I know a good portion of the time we are safe inside this barrier, but you must understand that I worry for her safety regardless.

So I suppose this is the part where I ask something else not so specific. The gift I received was for your Earthling holiday Father's Day. I've never put much stock in such things, but this last weekend certainly has changed my mind about it a little. Is this something you also observe in your own worlds? And if so, what is it that you've done or would do that you would consider worthy of your father?

Whatever. You care for that girl and you know it. If you didn't you wouldn't be so proud of her and talk about her the way you have. I may not be a rocket scientist but I'm not stupid, Cliff. You'd think you'd of figured that out about me by now. [AND THAT HE'S A DAD AND HE SORT OF GETS IT BELIEVE IT OR NOT?]

I, uh...

[He never doubted Vegeta's intelligence for a second, but he had brought up a topic that Cliff had never really thought that much about before. He never considered having a family-- he was too 'popular', and there was no way he could balance that with anything else. It was why he hadn't kept up with the kids at the Dojo, even if he did make it a point to drop by when he could.

Having a family...was a different business entirely.]

We just kinda fished her outta space, really. The pod we found her in was way off course, and it was only a piece of luck, really. Everyone on the Diplo-- we tried our best with her, but there's only so much a bunch of people in the middle of some interplanetary politicking can do. And we weren't exactly in a position to bring her back to Earth...

So we kept her with us. Brought her to our home system to stay a while and let her try to be normal. But, Earthlings on our planet have to adapt to a few things, and she was kinda the odd man out.

...We couldn't give her what she needed, really. And I've spent too many weeks monkeying with other things to really...yanno, do anything.

I don't regret things, Vegeta, but I sometimes wish I had done just a little more.

[He shifts in his seat. In his drunkeness he'd gone down a road that now, isn't so comfortable for him. It sort of hits a little closer to home for him too, so he decides to be a little vague with his answer.]

It's never too late to change things, Cliff. If there's one thing I've learned so far, it's that. [He won't get into that story. He doesn't like thinking about that even to this day. A hole through his dying son's chest wasn't a happy memory.] So instead of sitting there feeling sorry why don't you do something about it.

[Cliff chuckled in wry amusement.]

If only it were that easy. We're in a bit of a bind back home, so I'm not gonna be able to do anything until that's over. Besides...she kinda can't have a normal life, even if she wanted to.

[Did he just... insult her speed?

Oh, he did not.

Just like that, RD's face crinkles up into a scowl. Her ears fold back, and she has to take a deep breath to avoid snapping.]

It's this stupid power cap! That's what's holding me back. And I bet you anything that you couldn't do much better.

[Huff, huff. Fume, fume.]

I think it's pretty safe to say that a lot of people here haven't had normal lives. But I'm sure you can still manage. [He figures if he can do it, anyone can do it, damn it.] From experience I can tell you you'll get your chance. But not if you don't take care of business. If that little girl means as much to you as I think she does then you'd better step it up and do something so then maybe she can have a normal life one day.

[He doesn't know what else to say otherwise. That's what he did, at least. It's the only real advice he can offer other than yelling at him.]

Blame it all you want on the power cap, but that still doesn't mean that you know real speed at all. Let me show you. [He's not going to fly around the enclosure though. Instead, he disappears before her very eyes. And when she finds him, she'll discover he's standing right behind her.]

[Dash's eyes widen when he disappears, and she takes a look around. It takes a few moments for her to realize he's moved behind her, and when she does, she shoots back.]

How'd you-- are you sure you didn't just use some magic to disappear?

It's no magic. It's simply the abilities the warriors of my world possess. My wife likes to put it as 'popping out of thin air'. And even under the power cap we can move at faster than light speeds. Here I was getting the impression you could do that too. I guess not.

[He had no real way to describe the problem without stepping into his definition of 'unneeded and very complicated information.' Even if it didn't, the full scope of the problem hit too close to home. He's finally had a chance to process it all since coming to Luceti, and all it did was made him sympathize with those Existential philosophers from centuries ago.

It was complicated. Too complicated for his tastes.

Fortunately, there were aspects of the problem that were more mundane. Mostly.]

Remember what I said about being near the top of the Federation's blacklist? That'll never let her live normally even after we fix things. Being popular ain't easy, yanno.

There are lots of planets in the universe. I'm sure you'll find one where she can reside. Not every organization touches every corner of the galaxy. You'd be telling me a lie if you said that this Federation has found every single planet. Even I found a home in the vast reaches of space that didn't know my name.

[He will keep it at that. Going farther with that information will only lead to a lot of stories that Cliff probably doesn't want to know about.]

[Cliff looked at Vegeta for a beat before he chuckled, amused by the turn their conversation has taken.]

That's gotta be nice. Hope I get that lucky one day, if the work ever gets done. 'Til then, I've resolved to keep her with me. [Another pause.] I'd keep the both of them with me.

Both? Why am I not surprised? You'll take the whole galaxy in if someone let you. Now I don't know why you didn't open an orphanage instead of working on a vessel.

[Cliff stared, torn between not wanting to understand and absolute shock at the suggestion. He never, ever wanted to open an orphanage-- his reasons were far greater than just the kids. He was tired of the pressure that the Federation was placing on the unallied systems to join, he was tired of their politics and their wars, he was tired of the sheer lack of support they gave to systems that needed it, their lack of concern...

The things he picked up as a teenager never quite left him, and fueled his frustration and desire to subvert any and all authority in his life. So it made him popular-- so what? He was doing what was right by him, but Vegeta...]

What?!

Faster than light...

[Dash gulps. How's she supposed to compete with that?

Well... Ha. No need to appear flaky!]

Then I guess I'll just have to keep pushing myself harder. Just watch. Sooner or later, I'll be shooting across this village at twice the speed of light! No, three times!

A hoarder collects the unnecessary and then takes it for granted! I collect the necessary and I polish them, sharpen them and name them and I do this every day! [ Vegeta you just opened up Pandora's Scroll. ]

Not one, but two adopted children- perhaps you're older than you think you are, Cliff. [It just makes him laugh. Cliff's confusion was honestly entertaining to him, the fact that either everything really is going right over his head or whatever else it might be. It's not like Vegeta doesn't get it, it's just hilarious to him that it's very, very clear that Cliff doesn't get it.]

And who's the second one? Will I be hearing about that one endlessly too?

Oh no no-- you didn't just--

[He took a breath, trying to think coherently. Unfortunately, the alcohol was taking its toll...he utterly failed.]

I haven't adopted anyone Vegeta, and I'm not even forty! I'm old, but not that old.

Besides. Bodyguard, remember? He's also a person of interest, so keeping him with me is the best way to keep him safe.

Three? Really? Well, when you're able to achieve such speeds, why don't you let me know. Perhaps then we'll have a race of sorts. That sounds fun, wouldn't you say?

[His eyebrow raises angrily at 'that old' but he keeps himself from freaking out on Cliff, finding it not worth the effort.]

Yeah sure, whatever. [He doesn't totally buy that even if it's the truth. From the way he's already talked about Maria? Uh huh.]

Aw-- c'mon man!

[Cliff was getting a tad belligerant. He clearly didn't see Vegeta's logic.]

Look. I'm not quite old enough to be their dad. Seriously. Think rationally here.

You sure do act like it. [Said more to get a rise out of his friend even though....IT MAY BE TRUE...] So who's the other one, I know this won't be the last time I hear about it.

[Frowning. He's had a few beers. Don't tease him so hard!]

His name's Fayt. Fayt Leingod. He's the kid I've been watching, and he's here in town with me.

He's here, eh? Well, I can imagine that will be an inevitable meeting. [He finishes off the new beer he'd ordered. Finally, the room was spinning a bit and he felt pretty good. It was about that time that he probably stopped and started to think about eating so he didn't get sick the next day.]

Have fun babysitting then.

Ha, just you wait! As soon as I break light speed, you'll be the first to know.
