[It's been a few days since Father's Day. And he got a really nice surprise from his daughter that he never thought possible. Bulla training and honing her skills and power, it really meant something to him; so he's flipping his journal open now since Luceti played a large part of it. He's not even angry this time.]

It's come to my attention that a good number of you had a hand in the gift I received over the weekend. I will say I'm impressed- the lot of you have done the impossible with my daughter Bulla and it most certainly paid off. So for that...[His voice trails off, since saying these sorts of things isn't exactly natural to him.] For that I am grateful. I know a good portion of the time we are safe inside this barrier, but you must understand that I worry for her safety regardless.

So I suppose this is the part where I ask something else not so specific. The gift I received was for your Earthling holiday Father's Day. I've never put much stock in such things, but this last weekend certainly has changed my mind about it a little. Is this something you also observe in your own worlds? And if so, what is it that you've done or would do that you would consider worthy of your father?

[In a way, Father's Day will always be a sad moment to her. Her dad left her and her mom when she was still little, and she hasn't seen him since. There's an occasional, very occasional, sketch or postcard from his travels, but... it's not enough to a lonely girl who wishes for a intact family.

She decides to give the much better and more positive answer. There is one, after all, and it's something she's thought about a lot, too:]

I haven't really celebrated that sort of holiday, but I think I'd like to show him that part of me comes from who he is, too. That we share some of our interests and thinking, and that I've inherited some of his good points.

[He listens, and actually understands what she's getting at. He feels that way too sometimes about his own father.]

And how exactly would you go about showing him these things?

Well... Papa's a painter, so I'd like to try creative things, too. I'd like to see if that part of him really is in me, too. Maybe that's why I like things like sewing or knitting; it isn't art, but it's still something I make on my own, choosing the patterns and colors and stitches, too. I like music, too.

[He..doesn't really get art. It was another one of those Earthling things that he found to be a waste of time, but he didn't care if her father made a career out of it- it's just something Vegeta would probably never try himself. Except music. He can understand that.]

Well, if you like music so much why don't you try it out? Last I checked that fell under the category of art forms on Earth, if that's where you're from.

I keep thinking I should, but even if I try to study it a little, I'm not sure I actually have any talent for it.

Well you're not going to find out by standing there and doubting yourself, now are you? [Nope, there will be no excuses in the presence of the Saiyan Prince.]

I know what you're saying is right, but I can't help being a bit nervous to try it.

[She's a bit of a coward that way, she knows. But refusing to let her give excuses is helping to give her a bit of courage.]

[Man if she needs someone like that he's the right person to talk to, though he'll be pretty hard on her about it.]

Don't be absurd. If that's what you want to use your time for then I'd suggest you get over it and do it. [He'd call it a waste of time but he's grown to like music after living on Earth for so long.] Besides, what would you try anyway? Hopefully not that detestable metal music.

[Well, no, she's not really a metal fan. She doesn't admit she is a fan of light pop music, either.

What she admits is this.]

I enjoy classical music, so maybe... [Maybe she could try that.]

[Their music tastes might be more in alignment than she realizes...]

Classical? Which one is that? [He knows the basic genres on the radio pretty well but past that he's clueless. He's probably heard classical before though.]

[How to describe it...]

It's usually instrumental - orchestral. I could show you some samples of it, if you'd like sometime.

No need, I know what you're getting at now. It's the one with trumpets and flutes and the like. [Those are seriously the only instruments he can name. Ask him what a violin is and he wouldn't have a clue.]

Well, yes, those are some of the instruments used. [She likes the strings section, personally.] I enjoy it.

[Some of it can be grandiose enough that even Vegeta might not mind it.]

[He actually doesn't mind western style music too much at all...]

Then why don't you stop talking about it and get one of those books that teaches you. [Bulla had some of those when she was younger. He has a small idea of music education. Not that he paid much attention past the noise made from his little girl practicing.]

I've tried, a little bit, but it seems to be slow going. [This is mostly modesty. She has no special talent for it, but she's done well enough for someone studying on her own.]

And once you finish what do you even plan on doing with that skill of yours then? [He even knows what a concert is. What's the point of anything if you don't put it to good use?]

[She can't picture giving concerts. She wouldn't be able to stand so many eyes on her at once.]

I think I'd just like to enjoy it, for its own sake.

Enjoy it huh? Wouldn't you want to see how you fared against others with the same skill? [Modest Ami, meet competitive Vegeta.]

[Oh, Ami has her share of competitiveness... she just tends not to let it out. At all. Because she's much more afraid of upsetting the other person.]

Sometimes, maybe. [She used to play competitive chess. That counts, right? Or... not, considering she used to walk away from matches sometimes.]

Good. You're not going to be able to be the best if you don't make sure you've beaten everyone else. Shouldn't be hard.

[Unfortunately, that's part of what she didn't like about being at the top of the class back in school, and sometimes doesn't like about her growing reputation as a doctor today in her world. It may mean she's good at what she does, but it also brings resentment from others and detractors. Because they've been beaten.]

I think it would be best if it was possible to succeed without someone else being beaten.

It's not as if you're fighting to the death, we're talking about music now aren't we? Being beaten by someone else isn't going to kill them. If anything at all they should make it a point and work to defeat whoever triumphed over them in the first place.

If they've got such a problem with it then perhaps they need to work a little bit harder. [And he's speaking from experience.]

We're talking about music, but... sometimes people become angry, or say snide things, or something like that, even so.

[And while she's gotten better at withstanding that, it's still never a pleasant feeling, to know you're being whispered about and resented.]

And why would you care? Sounds like jealousy to me. I think they need to get over it. [AT LEAST HE'S NOT BEING A HYPOCRITE ANYMORE ABOUT THAT...]

[Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't; she's not making a value judgment about that. What she knows is that it's uncomfortable to have someone irate at her.

...Then again, by trying to avoid it, she's caused problems for herself sometimes, too.]

Anyway, I'd like to work at it and practice, and become good at it. I'll focus on that for the time being.
